Heightened Maritime Security Needed After Three Armed Robbery Incidents in Singapore Strait

Oct 26, 2020 19:27

On October 25, 2020, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) reported three alarming incidents of armed robbery occurring within the Singapore Strait. These events unfolded in rapid succession, with each attack taking place within a mere two hours and in close proximity to one another. The vessels involved in these unsettling episodes included the 'Seajourney', the 'A Racer', and the 'El Matador'. All three ships experienced unauthorized boardings by unidentified assailants; however, thanks to prompt action, the perpetrators fled the scene without stealing any valuables. Fortunately, crew members aboard all vessels remained safe throughout these occurrences. In light of the incidents, ReCAAP has urged all maritime operators to heighten their vigilance and implement additional safety protocols while navigating this region. Furthermore, it has called upon neighboring states to intensify their patrol efforts and enforce stricter maritime security measures. The Master of the 'El Matador' reported a notable encounter with three intruders in the engine room before promptly sounding the alarm. Subsequently, four individuals were witnessed fleeing the vessel. To ensure the safety of his crew and the ship, the Master made the strategic decision to divert the bulk carrier to Batam Anchorage for a thorough inspection by the Indonesian Navy. After conducting a meticulous security check, the Navy confirmed that there were no remaining threats onboard. With the crew safe and no items reported missing, the vessel was able to resume its journey.
