On the evening of September 18, 2024, a coordinated rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Gavdos, when the Port Authorities of Agia Galini, Paleochora, and Chora Sfakion received an urgent alert about a distress call from a migrant vessel. Responding promptly, the rescue efforts were spearheaded by the 'Lady Claudia' and the cargo ship m/v 'Elim Courage', which located and assisted 22 migrants, all of whom were identified as Sudanese nationals. After the successful operation, the rescuers navigated to Paleochora's anchorage, where the migrants were safely transferred to a patrol boat. They were then transported to Tigani port in Paleochora before being moved to a designated reception center in Agia Chania. Following the incident, the Central Port Authority of Chania initiated a preliminary investigation, and the migrant vessel was subsequently seized as part of the procedure.
