On the morning of August 28, 2023, at approximately 8 a.m., a man found himself in peril after capsizing his canoe near the Ringo promenade. The fierce mistral winds, coupled with strong currents, created a challenging situation for the distressed paddler. Fortunately, the crew of the ferry 'Elio', en route back to Messina, spotted the struggling canoeist and acted swiftly. They slowed the vessel and promptly deployed a rescue boat, while simultaneously alerting the Port Authority. In response, the Coast Guard dispatched a patrol boat to the scene, which retrieved the man and safely transported him ashore in good condition.

On the morning of February 24, 2021, tragedy struck at the port of Messina when 61-year-old Gaetano Puleo, a boatswain aboard the 'Elio', suffered a fatal accident during docking operations. While managing the vessel's approach at the Norimberga pier, Puleo was reportedly distracted and inadvertently overlooked an opening. When the mooring line became taut, it struck him with significant force, resulting in him falling into the water. His colleagues promptly responded and later recovered his body. Notably, Puleo was covering for a fellow crew member and was not scheduled to be on duty that day. In light of the incident, the Judicial Police of the Coast Guard have launched an investigation. Measuring 133.6 meters in length and boasting a 21.5-meter beam, this double-ender is set to enhance the ferry services in the region. Following its delivery, the ELIO has embarked on its journey, departing from Yalova and making its way to the scenic Messina Strait.
