Vessel Grounded in Littlehampton: The Incident of the 'Elise'
On March 30, 2021, the cargo ship 'Elise', arriving from Antwerp, found itself adrift after breaking free from its moorings in Littlehampton, West Sussex. At approximately 1:15 a.m., the vessel successfully entered the harbour, docking shortly thereafter at 1:45 a.m. and beginning cargo unloading activities. However, as the tide receded, the situation took a turn when one of the mooring lines snapped at 3:30 a.m. This incident caused the ship's stern to drift about 30 metres into the River Arun before it came to a halt, still secured by remaining lines. The local harbour tug, 'Erica', was promptly dispatched to the scene, with harbour personnel aiding in securing additional lines to the vessel. Despite the grounding, the 'Elise' remained undamaged, with no pollution or injuries reported. Navigational space remained adequate for other vessels to pass safely along the western bank. In light of the situation, authorities closed a 300-metre section of the river as the tide began to rise, ensuring the safety of all river users. By 2 p.m., the tug managed to free the 'Elise', allowing it to return to its berth and resume cargo offloading operations.
Elise Adrift: River Arun Blocked After Ship Breaks Moorings
On the afternoon of September 18, 2020, the cargo vessel 'Elise' experienced a significant mooring incident in Littlehampton, West Sussex. The ship lost its bow moorings and began to drift across the River Arun, effectively obstructing passage for all vessels, including kayaks. While the stern of the 'Elise' remained secured at its berth, the crew swiftly deployed the portside anchor in an attempt to stabilize the situation. Fortunately, as the tide rose later that night, the vessel was successfully refloated and freed from its precarious position. The 'Elise' had just arrived in Littlehampton from Antwerp earlier that same day, making the incident all the more unexpected.
