Emergency Medical Evacuation Conducted Off Cherbourg for Injured Seafarer
On July 30, 2014, at 15:15 local time, the CROSS Gris-Nez received an urgent call from British and German authorities regarding a medical emergency aboard the cargo vessel 'Reeperbahn.' A 24-year-old Filipino crew member sustained serious hand injuries, prompting the need for immediate medical support. Due to the vessel's location—approximately 45 nautical miles northeast of Cherbourg—coordination of the response was promptly handed over to CROSS Joburg. The operational team at CROSS Joburg quickly established a conference call involving the Centre for Maritime Medical Consultation in Toulouse and the SAMU unit based in Le Havre. Following their assessment, an urgent evacuation to a nearby hospital was deemed necessary. In response, CROSS Joburg dispatched an EC 225 helicopter from the French Navy Base in Cherbourg, which reached the 'Reeperbahn' by 16:30. A rescue diver was airlifted onto the cargo ship to facilitate the transfer of the injured crew member. By 17:00, the injured seafarer was successfully transported back to Cherbourg and subsequently taken by ambulance to Hospital Pasteur for further treatment. At the time of the incident, the 'Reeperbahn' was making its way from Voudia to Middlesborough, underscoring the challenges of maritime operations in medical emergencies.
ELLIS F Detained for Fuel Violations at Kiel-Dietrichsdorf
On October 23, 2010, authorities conducted a routine inspection of the vessel 'Ellis F' (IMO 8607725) while it was docked at the power station in Kiel-Dietrichsdorf. During the check, police discovered that the ship's fuel tanks contained heavy fuel oil that exceeded permissible sulfur limits. As a consequence, the vessel was detained, and its departure was contingent upon the captain paying a security fine of €10,505. Furthermore, the ship was required to switch to fuel with a lower sulfur content before it could be cleared to leave. After fulfilling these conditions, the 'Ellis F' was permitted to set sail on October 24, headed for Riga to pick up another shipment of coal destined for Kiel.
