Innovative MAN Alpha Kappel FP Propeller Powers New 58,500-dwt Bulker into Eco-Friendly Future

Oct 02, 2015 09:26

In a significant stride towards enhanced maritime efficiency, the 'Elsabeth C', a 58,500-dwt Supramax bulk carrier, has recently completed its sea trials off the coast of China. This vessel, owned by Frontmarine Co. Ltd., an affiliate of the Cypriot ship management powerhouse Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd., marks one of the initial commercial deployments of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s state-of-the-art MAN Alpha Kappel FP propeller. The Elsabeth C is the first of eight sister ships set to revolutionize bulk shipping, all powered by the advanced single MAN B&W 5S60ME-C8.2 engines, delivering a robust SMCR of 8050 kW at 89 rpm. Following closely, the ship's sister vessel, 'Mirela', has also successfully navigated its sea trials. Lemissoler underscores that the innovative Kappel propeller significantly outperforms traditional designs in fuel efficiency, complemented by the vessels’ refined hull design and the implementation of silyl acrylate antifouling paint. During the trials, both the Elsabeth C and Mirela showcased impressive fuel consumption, averaging just 23 metric tons per day while cruising at around 14.2 knots in ballast conditions. The Elsabeth C further distinguished itself with a successful crash-stop test characterized by minimal noise and vibration. Thomas Leander, Head of Propulsion – PrimeServ Four-Stroke – Denmark, highlighted a pivotal design consideration aimed at mitigating challenges previously faced by similar vessels, particularly concerning light running margins (LRM). To address this, MAN Diesel & Turbo has rolled out enhanced LRM specifications ranging from 4-10% for all FP propellers and two-stroke engines. The unique propeller configuration applied to the 58,500-dwt vessels is optimally designed to be 3-4% more efficient than standard setups, ensuring robust performance, safety, and improved maneuverability throughout the vessel's operational lifespan. The cutting-edge propeller technology has been meticulously adapted to fit the new 58,500-dwt design, with construction undertaken by New Times Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Jiangsu, China, with delivery slated for September 2015. The subsequent sister vessels are scheduled for rollout over the next year, all crafted to optimize carrying capacity and operational efficiency within the 190-meter LOA category. Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd. has evolved into a prominent entity in global shipping, engaging in diverse activities such as liner shipping, ship ownership, and management, with its headquarters in Limassol, Cyprus, supported by an extensive international office network.
