Early in the morning on March 26, 2017, a nautical incident occurred about 18 kilometers off the Ostend coast involving the tanker 'Galway Fisher' and the pilot boat 'Pilot 1'. The pilot boat experienced a collision with the port side of the tanker, resulting in noticeable damage to both vessels, including the tanker’s railing. Two Dutch pilots aboard the 'Pilot 1' sustained minor injuries and needed to be airlifted to a local hospital due to complaints of back pain. Fortunately, both vessels showed signs of hull damage but managed to stay afloat. After the incident, the 'Pilot 1' made its way back to Ostend, while the 'Galway Fisher', which was not carrying cargo, found itself stranded on the Westhinder sandbank. The tanker had set sail from Cork on March 20 and was en route for dry docking in Sluiskil.
