Dramatic Rescue: Distressed Yacht Crew Saved by Tanker and Navy Helicopter
On the evening of December 30, 2019, the sailing yacht โEvelinaโ, carrying a crew of four, experienced a critical malfunction while navigating the challenging waters of the Makronisos Strait. With its sails torn and engine inoperative, the vessel faced a dire situation. Despite swift action from the port authorities of Lavrion and Rafina, who dispatched tugs 'Salvor I' and 'Apollon', the efforts to tow the distressed yacht were thwarted by fierce winds reaching nine Beaufort from the northeast. In response to the escalating emergency, a navy helicopter was mobilized to execute a daring rescue operation. Brave crew members aboard the helicopter successfully hoisted three individuals to safety, while the final crew member was rescued by the tanker 'Energia' and subsequently transported to Elefsis. The yacht, which had embarked from Isthmus heading towards Lavrio, was left adrift in the turbulent waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
