Lehmann Runner Undergoes Repairs at MWB Bremerhaven Shipyard
On January 24, 2023, the Curacao-flagged vessel 'Lehmann Runner' departed from the port of Brake at 5:00 AM, setting its course towards Bremerhaven. Upon arrival at 7:20 AM, the ship docked at MWB Bremerhaven Shipyard to carry out essential repairs. Following the completion of the maintenance work, the Lehmann Runner set sail once again on February 8, 2023, at 5:45 PM, with its next destination being Moerdijk, which is expected on February 9, 2023, at 6:30 PM.
Major Safety Violation Detected on the 'Lehmann Runner' in Brake
On January 20, a routine inspection of the 'Lehmann Runner' at the port of Brake raised serious safety concerns for the aging vessel. Officers from the local water police discovered that the loading marks on the ship were inaccurate, indicating an overload situation. Upon boarding, inspectors noted a concerning tilt to the port side, revealing that the ship had exceeded its draught limit by eight centimeters. The vessel's 56-year-old Lithuanian captain disclosed that a significant leak in the ballast water tank had persisted for the past 11 months, leading to a continuous influx of water at a staggering rate of 10 tons per hour. To combat this issue, the crew had been applying efforts to dewater the ship every six hours. The damage was temporarily managed by using a clamping screw to press a wooden wedge against the crack, highlighting the urgency for proper repairs. Further investigation revealed that the ship had been overloaded by an additional 45 tons of corn, which was against the regulations set while in Szczecin. As a consequence of the findings from the port state control, the Hamburg Department of Transport and Ship Safety was notified, resulting in an immediate ban on the vessel’s departure. Before the 'Lehmann Runner' can set sail again, it must undergo necessary repairs at a local shipyard. Additionally, due to the overload instance, the captain has incurred a fine of €1,825. This situation underscores the critical need for stringent maritime safety protocols and adherence to shipping regulations.
