Tanker Incident in Arctic Waters: SCF Yenisei Hits Underwater Object

Sep 30, 2014 22:04

On September 26, 2014, the tanker SCF Yenisei experienced a critical incident in the Arctic region when it collided with an unidentified underwater object while operating in Obskaya Guba Bay, located at the mouth of the river Ob. At the time of the collision, the vessel was in the process of loading a substantial cargo of 27,680 tons of crude oil. The impact resulted in significant damage to the forepeak area, particularly affecting a ballast tank on the port side, allowing water to enter the vessel. In response to the emergency situation, the tanker was able to relocate to Sabietta the following day for urgent repairs. Professional divers were deployed to seal the breaches, restoring the ship's integrity. By September 28, after completing the temporary fixes, the SCF Yenisei resumed its journey towards Murmansk, ensuring that operations could continue without further disruption.

Tanker's Unauthorized Journey Through the Great Barrier Reef Leads to Official Detention

Jul 24, 2014 08:30

A significant ruling from a tribunal has reaffirmed the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's (AMSA) decision to detain the oil tanker SCF Yenisei for navigating through the iconic Great Barrier Reef without necessary navigational charts. The incident occurred on October 4, 2013, when the Liberian-flagged vessel was held in Mackay, Queensland, after making its way from Kawasaki, Japan, via Hydrographers Passage, yet lacking the required navigational resources. Vessel manager Unicom Management Services, based in Cyprus, argued that the violation wasn't severe enough to warrant such a detention. 'It's crucial to have accurate charts for navigation in the Great Barrier Reef, known for its environmental significance and navigational challenges,' stated Allan Schwartz, General Manager of AMSA's Ship Safety Division. This situation marks the second appeal in just two years against AMSA's action toward vessels failing to possess essential navigational charts.

SCF Yenisei Embarks on Arctic Journey from Murmansk to Japan via Northern Sea Route

Aug 08, 2013 07:42

On August 6, 2013, the large-capacity tanker SCF Yenisei set sail from the bustling port of Murmansk, heading towards Japan along the strategically significant Northern Sea Route (NSR), as reported by the press center of Sovcomflot. This 47,000-dwt MR type vessel, equipped with Ice Class Ice-1A (Arc4) specifications, is tasked with delivering light oil products to Chiba, Japan. Remarkably, the journey spans 5,767 nautical miles, cutting the distance by a substantial 56% compared to the traditional Suez Canal route, which measures 12,840 miles. The SCF Yenisei has been chartered by Glencore, reflecting the long-standing partnership between Glencore and Sovcomflot, dedicated to the management and operation of product carriers. This Arctic expedition marks the fifth voyage of Sovcomflot in the region, with an estimated travel duration of three weeks, including approximately eight days navigating through the Northern Sea Route. During the journey, the tanker will receive support from one of Atomflot FSUE's nuclear icebreakers to ensure safe passage. The anticipated arrival of the SCF Yenisei in Chiba is scheduled between August 29 and August 31, 2013.
