Algerian Stowaways Escape from Bulk Carrier in Constanta Port

Nov 22, 2019 11:33

In the early hours of November 20, 2019, a significant incident unfolded aboard the bulk carrier 'Nordic Barents' while docked in Constanta, Romania. At approximately 03:10 a.m., authorities were alerted when six Algerian refugees, who had been discovered on the ship by Romanian border guards, mysteriously vanished from a secured cabin. Promptly responding to the situation, border guards conducted a thorough inspection of the vessel and informed local law enforcement and port security teams about the escape. During their search, officials uncovered signs of a desperate escape attempt: the locked cabin had been set ablaze by the refugees, who seemingly used the mooring ropes to make their way to freedom. The last recorded inspection of the cabin took place at 02:30 a.m., revealing no signs of trouble at that time. An immediate alarm was raised, launching a comprehensive search operation involving local Police and Gendarmerie forces. Remarkably, five of the stowaways were located approximately 15 kilometers from Constanta, in a field near Murfatlar, on the evening of November 21, around 7:30 p.m. These individuals were subsequently transported to a police station in Târgu Jiu. Following their apprehension, the five refugees required medical attention due to smoke inhalation, a result of exposure to fumes from a burning mattress in the cabin they had escaped from. They were eventually returned to the ship by a Coast Guard team. Ongoing investigations are being carried out by the Border Police, in collaboration with the Prosecutor's Office of Constanța County, focusing on the potential crime of attempted illegal immigration across the state border.

On March 15, 2017, an incident occurred in the frigid waters of the Kara Sea involving the freighter "Nordic Barents" and the formidable nuclear icebreaker "Vaygach." While escorting vessels through icy conditions, the bulk carrier collided with the icebreaker's wooden fender, causing a dent to its hull but thankfully no breaches. The icebreaker emerged without any damages. Following the collision, the convoy continued its navigation through the ice. At the time of the incident, the "Nordic Barents" was making its way from Port Dickson to Murmansk, demonstrating the challenges of maritime operations in extreme environments.

Historic Voyage: 'Nordic Barents' Becomes First Non-Russian Bulk Carrier to Navigate the Northern Sea Route

Aug 29, 2010 18:59

In a groundbreaking development for maritime trade, the bulk carrier 'Nordic Barents' has secured approval to utilize the Northern Sea Route, marking the inaugural instance of a foreign-flagged vessel undertaking transit operations in Russian waters. Set to embark from Kirkenes, Northern Norway, in the coming weeks, the vessel will transport 41,000 tons of iron ore concentrate destined for China. This landmark voyage has garnered the green light from Russian authorities, notably the Northern Sea Route Administration under the Ministry of Transportation and Rosatomflot, the operators of Russia’s national icebreaking fleet. This historic approval paves the way for increased international shipping collaboration through the Arctic, utilizing Russian maritime routes for trade between foreign ports.
