Tanker 'Erato' Faces Stability Crisis During Repairs in Piraeus

Jan 23, 2026 09:22

On January 21, 2026, at approximately noon, the tanker 'Erato' encountered a significant stability issue while undergoing repairs in the shipyard area of Perama, Piraeus. A sudden influx of seawater into the ballast compartments caused the vessel to list heavily to its port side. This was exacerbated by an opening in the hull, combined with adverse weather conditions, leading to progressive flooding and a marked heel. In response to the emergency, the Greek Coastguard swiftly activated the local emergency plan. Three tugboats and a floating crane were dispatched to stabilize the situation. Additionally, port authorities and the lifeboat 'Aegean Sea' were on alert, ready to assist. To mitigate potential environmental impact, an anti-pollution boom was strategically deployed around the tanker’s stern. By nightfall, efforts to restore stability proved successful through controlled ballasting, allowing the hull to rise above the waterline. Internal flooding was effectively managed, and water was pumped out on January 22. However, on the following morning, a visible pollution spread over an area of approximately 400-500 square meters was detected, comprising scattered, iridescent, self-dissolving petroleum products. Decontamination procedures were promptly initiated, and thankfully, no injuries were reported during this incident. The 4th Port Department of Perama, part of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident. Consequently, they have mandated that the departure of the 'Erato' be prohibited until a certificate of continued seaworthiness is presented from the relevant classification society overseeing its operations.
