Working Conditions Aboard the Erato

On January 21, 2026, at approximately noon, the tanker 'Erato' encountered a significant stability issue while undergoing repairs in the shipyard area of Perama, Piraeus. A sudden influx of seawater into the ballast compartments caused the vessel to list heavily to its port side. This was exacerbated by an opening in the hull, combined with adverse weather conditions, leading to progressive flooding and a marked heel. In response to the emergency, the Greek Coastguard swiftly activated the local emergency plan. Three tugboats and a floating crane were dispatched to stabilize the situation. Additionally, port authorities and the lifeboat 'Aegean Sea' were on alert, ready to assist. To mitigate potential environmental impact, an anti-pollution boom was strategically deployed around the tanker’s stern. By nightfall, efforts to restore stability proved successful through controlled ballasting, allowing the hull to rise above the waterline. The 'Erato', a vessel that experienced an engine failure south of Kriti Island on April 24, 2023, is currently undergoing essential repairs in Drapetsona. After being towed to a repair facility in Piraeus by the tug 'Christos XXXIII' (IMO: 9131292) on April 29, the ship's owners have supplied a new set of spare parts from the authorized manufacturer. Maintenance efforts are focused on the vessel's main shaft, propeller, rudder, and associated systems. Following the completion of these thorough repairs, the ship will undergo sea trials under the watchful eye of a class surveyor in the designated anchorage area. As of June 19, the 'Erato' remains moored at the repair pier, making significant headway towards a return to active duty.

On the afternoon of September 29, 2018, maritime operations took an unexpected turn when the tank m/v 'Erato' made contact with the anchored container vessel 'Erato' at the bustling Piraeus anchorage. The incident occurred while the tanker was maneuvering alongside for bunkering purposes. Fortunately, both seafaring giants sustained only minor damages, with no breaches or leaks reported. As night fell, the container ship remained anchored at the coordinates 37° 53.32' N 023° 33.21' E. Thankfully, all crew members were unharmed, with the tanker having 18 personnel onboard and the container ship accommodating 32 crew members. The Central Port Authority of Piraeus promptly initiated an investigation into the incident, resulting in the temporary detention of both vessels until they received assurance of seaworthiness from their respective classification societies.

On August 23, 2023, a notable maritime incident unfolded at Keratsini Harbor in Piraeus, Greece, as the product tanker ERATO collided with the berthed container ship MSC BRIANNA while navigating through the busy port. Preliminary reports indicate that the ERATO sustained damage to its starboard bow, while the MSC BRIANNA incurred damage to its portside aft area. The extent of the damages on both vessels remains unclear as investigations continue. Following the incident, MSC BRIANNA was moved to a different berth on August 24. As of 1230 UTC on the same day, both ships were still at Keratsini, being held for inspection before being allowed to resume operations.
