ESL Africa Runs Aground Near Oxelösund: Immediate Response from Swedish Authorities
On October 21, 2017, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the cargo vessel ESL Africa experienced a grounding incident southwest of Oxelösund shortly after departing from Norrköping en route to Dakar. Just two hours into its journey, the Swedish Coast Guard and the Maritime and Aviation Rescue Center (JRCC) received notifications of the grounding at 8:21 p.m., occurring near Hummelvik. The Coast Guard dispatched the vessel KBV 452 from Oxelösund to assess the situation, while the environmental protection vessel KBV 031 was deployed from Nynäshamn around midnight. During the night, the surveillance vessel KBV 311, equipped with divers, arrived to inspect the integrity of the vessel's hull. Fortunately, inspections revealed no oil leakage into the surrounding waters. With favorable weather conditions, divers proceeded to examine the hull on October 22, and by 10:29 a.m., the ESL Africa was successfully refloated, making its way back to Oxelösund under its own power. The vessel was escorted by KBV 031 and KBV 503. Preliminary investigations indicated that engine malfunctions were the cause of the grounding, and routine drug tests conducted on the ship's officers returned negative results.
