Esvagt Aurora Commended for Firefighting Efforts at Hammerfest Gas Facility
On September 28, 2020, the offshore support vessel 'Esvagt Aurora' played a pivotal role in combating a fire that erupted in a turbine at the Melkøya Gas Production Plant in Hammerfest. This facility is vital for receiving, processing, and converting natural gas from the Snøhvit field into liquefied natural gas (LNG). A swift shutdown was essential to prevent the situation from escalating. At 4:35 p.m., while the 'Esvagt Aurora' was departing Hammerfest port, the crew received an emergency alert and promptly sprang into action. Within just 10 minutes, the vessel was in position, ready to assist and deploy water to the affected area. Equipped with two state-of-the-art FiFi (firefighting) cannons, the 'Esvagt Aurora' has the capability to discharge 120,000 liters of water per minute, reaching impressive distances of 180 meters and ascending to heights of 110 meters. The strategic placement of these cannons at the bow, alongside the ship's echo sounder, enabled the vessel to approach the plant efficiently. The firefighting operation lasted for approximately five hours. By almost midnight, Equinor, the operator of Melkøya, confirmed that the fire was under control and had been extinguished, allowing the 'Esvagt Aurora' to head back to its designated mooring at Vår Energi's Goliat-FPSO.
A.P. Møller-Mærsk Divests Majority Stake in Esvagt for $610 Million
In a strategic move to streamline its operations, A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S has divested its majority stake in Esvagt, a prominent offshore service and rescue vessel operator, for a noteworthy $610 million. This transaction involves two leading infrastructure investment firms: 3i Infrastructure Plc from the U.K. and AMP Capital from Australia. This sale is part of Maersk's ongoing strategy to concentrate on its primary sectors of container shipping and oil exploration. Over recent years, the Danish conglomerate has undertaken significant asset divestments, totaling billions of dollars, which include the sale of liquefied natural gas tankers and a substantial portion of its holdings in Danske Bank. Beyond divestments, Maersk continues to invest in critical areas such as oil-drilling equipment, major marine terminals, and state-of-the-art mega-container ships. Esvagt, established in 1981, boasts a robust fleet of 43 vessels dedicated to providing essential emergency response services for offshore oil rigs, facilitating oil spill clean-ups, and transporting personnel and equipment to offshore projects. Maersk's involvement with Esvagt dates back to the 1990s when it acquired a 75% stake in the company. The current purchaser, 3i Infrastructure Plc, is renowned for its investments in energy projects throughout Europe, while AMP Capital effectively manages a portfolio worth $124 billion, focusing on infrastructure endeavors.
