Australian Sailor Rescued by Bulk Carrier After Yacht Mishap
On April 3, 2017, solo Australian sailor Lisa Blair found her 15-meter yacht, 'Climate Action', in a precarious situation after enduring structural damage and losing her mast during a fierce storm. Located 895 nautical miles southeast of the South African coast, Blair was able to make a Pan Pan emergency call to the South African Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). Thankfully, she reported that she was safe, uninjured, and capable of continuing her journey under motor power, though her situation required immediate attention. As she navigated her options, the MRCC deliberated whether Blair should head towards Marion Island or the Prince Edward Islands—both directing her away from the South African shoreline. To aid her, the MRCC enlisted the help of the bulk carrier 'Far Eastern Mercury', which was positioned 750 nautical miles from her coordinates. This vessel graciously volunteered to provide assistance. Accepting this offer meant that 'Climate Action' could continue to travel under her own power while en route to meet 'Far Eastern Mercury'. Upon rendezvousing, the bulk carrier supplied the additional fuel necessary for Blair to safely reach the South African coast. Eventually, on April 12, 2017, the yacht gracefully motored into the Port of Table Bay at 4 p.m., fully powered by her own engine. The National Sea Rescue Institute of South Africa's (NSRI) craft 'Spirit of Day' was there to escort her to a secure berth at the V&A Marina without requiring further assistance. Lisa Blair's adventure exemplifies the spirit of maritime resilience and cooperation.
