The Federal Beaufort: A New Addition to the Great Lakes Fleet
The Federal Beaufort, a remarkable addition to the Fednav fleet based in Montreal, is poised to navigate the Great Lakes. This modern bulk carrier, which was meticulously constructed by Oshima Shipbuilding Co., was completed in June 2015 at Saikai, Japan. With an impressive length of 199.98 meters and a width of 23.76 meters, the diesel-powered vessel boasts a registration of 20,789 gross tons. The Federal Beaufort’s capacity allows it to transport up to 34,564 tons of cargo when operating at saltwater draft. Last August, the Federal Beaufort made headlines after loading steel in Immingham, England, before setting sail for the Great Lakes. Following its time in the Great Lakes, the ship loaded a cargo of grain and then departed the Seaway to head to Veracruz, Mexico. After successfully unloading its cargo in Mexico, the vessel traveled to New Orleans, where it was anchored at the time of this report. Registered under the Marshall Islands flag, the Federal Beaufort is part of a fleet that includes its sister ships, the Federal Bering, Federal Baltic, and Federal Barents, all of which are set to provide vital shipping services in and out of the Great Lakes region.
