Fednav Introduces Groundbreaking Ballast Water Treatment System on Great Lakes Vessels

Sep 06, 2016 07:19

Fednav Ltd., recognized as Canada’s premier international bulk shipowner, has proudly introduced its latest innovation aimed at protecting the Great Lakes. The company recently received the Federal Caribou, one of seven newly constructed ocean-going lakers outfitted with a state-of-the-art ballast water treatment system. This advancement marks a historic first for the Great Lakes region and was unveiled at the Port of Indiana – Burns Harbor. The Federal Caribou employs a comprehensive approach to ballast water management, treating its ballast water in two critical phases: first by conducting an exchange in the North Atlantic and then implementing a dual filtration and chlorine disinfection treatment onboard. This robust system has been made possible through a partnership established in April 2015, when Fednav inked a deal with JFE Engineering Corporation to install the BallastAce treatment systems on its fleet of new ocean-going lakers, with the Federal Caribou being a prominent example. Paul Pathy, the president and co-CEO of Fednav Limited, emphasized the significance of this vessel, stating, "This vessel confirms that the protection of the Great Lakes is a priority for Fednav and demonstrates the confidence we have in the region’s future. These ships will allow us to offer our customers in Indiana and throughout the region an unparalleled service at a higher standard." With this initiative, Fednav continues to lead the maritime industry in sustainability and environmental responsibility, ensuring that the Great Lakes remain protected for future generations while providing exceptional service to its customers.

Fednav Limited Welcomes the Federal Caribou to Expand Its Fleet

Aug 25, 2016 11:23

In an exciting development for the maritime industry, Fednav Limited, recognized as Canada’s largest international bulk shipowner, has proudly introduced the Federal Caribou into its impressive fleet. This vessel is among seven new oceangoing lakers, marking a significant advancement as they are fitted with a state-of-the-art ballast water treatment system — a first-of-its-kind for the Great Lakes, according to Fednav. The Federal Caribou undertakes a rigorous ballast water treatment process, which involves two significant steps: exchanging ballast water while traversing the North Atlantic and employing an advanced filtration system coupled with chlorine disinfection right on the ship. This innovative approach underscores Fednav's commitment to sustainable maritime practices. Constructed as part of a larger initiative featuring a total of 16 'Handysize' vessels, the Federal Caribou was specifically designed with the unique operational demands of the Great Lakes in mind, involving a considerable investment of over $400 million. To accommodate the diverse range of cargoes it will handle, the vessel and its counterparts are equipped with box-shaped holds. Back in April 2015, Fednav made headlines by signing an agreement with JFE Engineering Corp. aimed at installing BallastAce ballast water treatment systems aboard these new ocean-going lakers. JFE is currently in the process of securing U.S. Coast Guard certification, which is projected to receive approval in 2017. Moreover, the Federal Caribou is engineered to be environmentally friendly, boasting a remarkable 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to vessels constructed less than 15 years ago. Additionally, the ship achieves more than a 15% decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions. This commitment to sustainability not only enhances Fednav's operational efficiency but also supports broader environmental protection efforts in the maritime sector.
