At that time, 'Federal Mayumi' was sailing 75 nautical miles west of the Island of Oléron, en route from Montreal to Bordeaux while carrying a cargo of cereals. Upon receiving the distress signal, CROSS Etel promptly issued a warning and dispatched a Cayman helicopter from the French frigate 'Bretagne', which was operating off the French coastline. Despite extensive search efforts lasting several hours, the absence of new leads resulted in the Maritime Prefect of the Atlantic deciding to suspend the search mission at 4:50 a.m. on May 14.
