Federal Montreal Faces Quarantine After COVID-19 Outbreak Aboard
The cargo vessel 'Federal Montreal', which was on a journey from Hamilton, Ontario to Spain, has been placed under quarantine after a crew member exhibited symptoms of COVID-19. Upon receiving medical advice, the ship was redirected to Conception Bay, where it dropped anchor on May 3, 2021. The ill crew member was promptly taken to a hospital in St. John’s and later confirmed to have contracted COVID-19. Currently, the vessel, which departed Montreal on April 26, has 21 crew members onboard, all Indian nationals. Thankfully, none had direct contact with anyone onshore. As of May 3, a total of 13 crew members have tested positive for the virus. In response to the situation, the ship will remain anchored approximately 25 kilometers west of St. John's. To ensure the safety and health of the crew, arrangements are in place to supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), cleaning supplies, and oxygen should it be necessary. The Public Health Agency of Canada is actively managing the response to this incident.
