Significant Fire Erupts in Cargo Hold of 'Federal Tweed' in Amsterdam

Apr 24, 2025 10:29

In the early hours of April 24, 2025, around 6 a.m., a substantial fire ignited in the cargo hold of the bulk carrier 'Federal Tweed' while it was docked at Amerikahaven Way in the Western Port Area of Amsterdam. The blaze produced a considerable amount of smoke, prompting local authorities to advise nearby residents to keep their windows and doors shut for safety. Reports of a burning odor were noted across various neighborhoods, specifically in Amsterdam-Geuzenveld, Osdorp, Badhoevedorp, and Lijnden. Emergency crews were seen employing a crane to methodically remove the smoldering scrap metal from the hold, which was subsequently placed on the quay for further containment and extinguishment. Firefighters worked diligently to douse the flames on the quayside, anticipating a prolonged effort to fully extinguish the fire. The patrol vessel 'PA 1 Castor' (MMSI: 244650483) was present on the scene to assist with the incident.
