FedNav Boosts Green Shipping with New Vessels for Great Lakes Trade
Fednav Group is taking a significant step towards sustainable shipping by adding three cutting-edge vessels to its fleet operating within the Great Lakes-Seaway System. The first of these eco-friendly ships, the MV Federal Yukina, has recently docked at Federal Marine Terminals in Hamilton after an extensive journey from Japan. The vessel, which arrived carrying industrial slag—a crucial ingredient in steel production—navigated a complex route that included delays due to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, a stop in Australia, a transit through the Panama Canal, and calls at New Orleans and Baltimore before arriving in Hamilton. Upon its arrival, a special ceremony featuring gift exchanges took place between Hamilton Port Authority officials and Fednav executives, marking the significance of this new addition. The Federal Yukina, constructed in 2010, enhances Fednav's fleet of Seaway-sized bulk carriers, which are essential for transporting both imports like steel and specialized cargoes into the Great Lakes region and exports, including US and Canadian grain, to international markets. The second and third vessels of this series are expected to join the Great Lakes fleet in 2012 and 2013, respectively, further strengthening Fednav’s commitment to environmentally responsible shipping practices.
