Yamal LNG Project Tankers Undergo Maintenance at Fayard Shipyard
As the summer maintenance period kicks off, the Fayard A/S shipyard in Odense welcomes its first Arc7 ice-class gas carriers servicing the Yamal LNG project. The 'Nikolay Urvantsev' (IMO: 9750660), which is chartered to Novatek’s Yamal LNG initiative, made its way to the drydock on June 26, 2025, and departed just a week later. Following closely, the Arc7 LNG carrier 'Fedor Litke', operated by Dynagas, arrived at Fayard A/S on July 17 after its delivery at Dunkerque, remaining in drydock as of July 24. Given the challenging operating conditions along Russia’s Northern Sea Route, repair and maintenance schedules for these Arctic LNG carriers have been significantly streamlined. The Damen ship repair team is concentrating on vital hull maintenance, which is crucial, as these LNG carriers frequently navigate through dense Arctic sea ice. Damen Shiprepair has confirmed adherence to all international sanctions legislation relating to Russia, affirming that their operations do not contravene international law, since the vessels are not directly sanctioned by the U.S. or the EU. However, obtaining spare parts has become progressively arduous; suppliers of gas chromatographs and flow meters, essential to LNG carriers, have placed restrictions on deliveries to Yamal fleet vessels due to potential sanction risks. Meanwhile, several sanctioned LNG carriers, including an Arc7 and multiple Arc4 ice-class vessels, have turned to Chinese shipyards for maintenance. Notably, the Arc7 LNG carrier 'Christophe de Margerie' spent numerous months at a shipyard on Zhoushan Island, east of Shanghai, during the summer of 2024. Presently, two additional sanctioned Russian gas carriers, namely 'Sputnik Energy' (IMO: 9256602) and 'Nova Energy' (IMO: 9324277), remain at yards in Zhoushan.
Greenpeace Protests Target LNG Carriers Amid Calls for EU Fuel Phase-Out
In a bold move to advocate for an end to fossil fuel dependency, Greenpeace staged protests against two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, highlighting the urgent need for the European Union to phase out Russian fuels. On March 27, 2025, eight dedicated Greenpeace activists momentarily obstructed the path of the 'Marvel Swallow' as it journeyed from Louisiana to Zeebrugge, Belgium, laden with LNG. The activists launched from their flagship, the 'Arctic Sunrise,' forming a blockade around the carrier and showcasing banners featuring the faces of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, alongside provocative slogans such as 'Their gas your cash.' Greenpeace emphasized that this demonstration aimed to alert the EU about the geopolitical repercussions of their reliance on fossil fuels, which is exacerbating fuel price inflation for households. Despite the protest, the 'Marvel Swallow' successfully docked in Zeebrugge later that day. Earlier, on March 26, activists also targeted the 'Fedor Litke,' which was making its way from Sabetta, Russia. These protests are part of Greenpeace's broader campaign urging the EU to commit to a total fossil gas phase-out by 2035, moving towards a more sustainable energy future.

This allision took place at 3:40 PM as the bunker tanker was maneuvering away from the LNG vessel after completing its bunkering operations. The "Fedor Litke", which had just been delivered and was preparing for its inaugural journey to Sabetta in the Arctic Sea, sustained a hull breach measuring approximately 0.2 meters in length, located one meter above the waterline in ballast tank 4 area.
