A daring rescue operation took place in the South Pacific Ocean on the evening of April 7, 2014, when a Canadian sailor found himself in dire straits after his yacht, 'L'Antillaise', capsized and began to sink. The single-handed sailor had been battling harsh conditions caused by a severe storm that forced his vessel to roll over, leading to significant water intake. Despite his attempts to manage the situation with a bilge pump, he activated his distress beacon when the pump failed. In response to his emergency call, a comprehensive rescue effort was initiated, involving an air force Orion aircraft and the car carrier 'Fidelio'. Demonstrating remarkable coordination, the Orion flew to the distress location, approximately 1,100 kilometers south of Rarotonga and 2,300 kilometers northeast of Auckland, while the 'Fidelio' was rerouted 370 kilometers to reach the scene. Navigating through rough seas and 25-knot winds, the crew of 'Fidelio' managed to locate the beleaguered sailor. Thanks to their exceptional seamanship, they assisted him in climbing aboard amid the chaotic waters. Fortunately, the sailor sustained only minor facial injuries during the ordeal.
