On March 26, 2013, the cargo vessel 'BBS Sand' encountered trouble while navigating the Tweed estuary en route to Koge, Denmark, from Berwick. At approximately 2 p.m., the ship grounded as it attempted to enter the Tweed Dock. Factors such as the tide and strong winds were noted to have contributed to the incident. Thankfully, a pilot boat was dispatched to assist the vessel, successfully guiding it back into deeper waters. By 3:25 p.m., 'BBS Sand' safely berthed at Tweed Dock, where it was loaded with malting barley cargo. BBS Sand Collision: Engine Failures Lead to Buoy Impact on Ems River

Jul 01, 2012 15:21

On June 30, 2012, at approximately 5 p.m., the cargo vessel BBS Sand experienced two engine blackouts, culminating in a collision with buoy 41 on the Ems River. The ship, en route from Klaipeda, made contact with the buoy, which it subsequently pulled into the navigational channel before the Russian captain managed to anchor the vessel in an emergency situation, rectifying the propulsion issues. After regaining mobility, the BBS Sand was aided by tugboats to safely dock at the port of Emden at 9:30 p.m. However, upon berthing at Zungen Quay, the local police initiated an investigation into the incident. Investigations revealed that the BBS Sand had encountered its first engine failure earlier that morning after passing through the Brunsbuettel locks of the Kiel Canal around midnight. A second blackout transpired a few hours later, leading to the unfortunate collision. Consequently, the ship was detained while authorities worked to determine the root cause of the engine failures before granting permission for it to sail again. In the meantime, the Emden Shipping Authority dispatched the buoy layer Gustav Meyer to reposition buoy 41 back to its rightful location.
