On July 7, 2018, a dramatic emergency rescue unfolded when the U.S. Coast Guard performed a medevac of a 58-year-old man from the fishing vessel 'Anna M', located around 275 miles off the coast of San Diego. The vessel's crew alerted the Coast Guard Sector San Diego's Joint Harbor Operations Center at approximately 5:45 a.m., reporting that a crew member was exhibiting symptoms consistent with a stroke. At that time, 'Anna M' was approximately 380 miles west of San Diego, prompting the vessel to alter its course towards the shore to facilitate the critical medevac. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched from Sector San Diego around 3:15 p.m. to execute the rescue mission. Recognizing the vast distance from land, a C-27 Spartan aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento was also deployed to maintain radio communication during the operation. By around 7 p.m., the Jayhawk crew successfully reached the vessel and hoisted the man aboard the helicopter. The rescue concluded at approximately 9:30 p.m. when the crew arrived at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, ensuring the patient received immediate medical attention.
