Iconic Sydney Ferry 'Narrabeen' Revitalized and Back in Service

Oct 26, 2025 10:22

The 'Narrabeen', a beloved ferry that was previously slated for scrapping in New South Wales, has successfully made its return to service following an extensive and transformative refurbishment. This revival comes as a beacon of hope for maritime enthusiasts, especially with the upcoming restoration of its sister vessel, the 'Freshwater'. The 'Narrabeen', renowned as a symbol of Sydney Harbour, has resumed operations on the F1 Circular Quay – Manly route thanks to a dedicated campaign that fought against its dismantling. This Freshwater-class ferry was among those marked for decommissioning in 2021, alongside the 'Queenscliff'. With their age and the hefty costs associated with keeping them afloat, their retirement seemed inevitable. Meanwhile, two other ferries, the 'Freshwater' and 'Collaroy', were initially set to continue service as the government shifted its focus to the introduction of the new Emerald-class ferries, which had faced several operational failures including steering complications and fuel tank issues. Responding to community-driven advocacy and concerns over prematurely retiring the iconic vessels, the current NSW government decided against sending the 'Narrabeen', 'Queenscliff', and 'Freshwater' to the scrapyard. Instead, they allocated necessary resources for vital upgrades to extend their operational lifespans. Due to the unique mechanical characteristics of the 'Collaroy', it was ultimately decided that this vessel would be retired. The 'Narrabeen' underwent a substantial refurbishment that totaled US$46 million, ensuring it could operate for another five years before its next major maintenance. A skilled team of shipbuilders, engineers, electricians, plumbers, and painters executed a comprehensive refurbishment plan that included a full engine overhaul, the integration of modern control systems, critical hull repairs, refreshed passenger amenities, and enhanced CCTV systems. With the 'Narrabeen' back in action, preparations are underway for the 'Freshwater' to enter dry dock, where it will receive necessary repairs and improvements to guarantee its serviceability through to at least 2030.
