Working Conditions Aboard the Fri-Skien

On June 7, 2026, the cargo vessel 'Fri Skien' experienced a leak resulting in water ingress approximately 20 nautical miles from Cap de La Hague while navigating the English Channel, as it traveled from Amsterdam to Cherbourg. The CROSS Jobourg was alerted to the situation. Despite being partially compromised, the vessel remained able to maneuver and navigate, prompting a call for assistance. In response, the CROSS activated level 2 of the ORSEC maritime emergency plan, coordinating efforts with the Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea. As the 'Fri Skien' neared Cherbourg, an assessment and intervention team, alongside marine firefighters equipped with pumping equipment, boarded the vessel around 7:00 p.m. The operation was facilitated by a pilot boat from the Cherbourg civilian port. Upon boarding, the team confirmed that the vessel had been stabilized. Given the favorable weather conditions, stakeholders including the shipowner, maritime prefect, and port authorities decided to redirect the ship to Le Havre for comprehensive inspections and assessments. The 'Fri Skien' successfully docked in Le Havre on June 8 at approximately 4 p.m., where repair work took place. Following completion of repairs, the vessel departed for Pasajes on June 13, with an estimated time of arrival set for June 16.
