Minor Collision at Norddeich Ferry Port Involves Frisia Ferries
On April 16, 2025, at approximately 11:34 a.m., the ferry 'Frisia E 1' (IMO: 1013250) was involved in a minor collision with another ferry, 'Frisia II', while departing from the Norddeich ferry port in the Aurich district. The incident resulted in a hole measuring around 30 x 30 centimeters on the port side of the 'Frisia E 1', situated above the waterline. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among passengers or crew, and environmental safety was not compromised during the incident. The Water Police Emden is currently conducting further investigations into the occurrence. Following the accident, the 'Frisia E 1' was taken out of service, with necessary repairs completed at the port. By late morning, on the same day, officials from the German Transport Accident Insurance Association, who oversee ship safety protocols, approved the ferry for resumption of operations. The 'Frisia E 1' returned to service by 12:30 p.m., while the 'Frisia II' sustained only minor damage. Emergency Response Activated After Diesel Spill in Norddeich Harbour
On the evening of July 17, 2023, a maintenance incident aboard an excursion vessel in Norddeich led to a diesel leak, releasing several liters of fuel into the harbour basin. The responsible party promptly contacted the volunteer fire brigade in Norden, notifying pertinent authorities about the situation. Fortunately, strong winds directed the drifting fuel to the opposite side of the basin, where the 'Frisia II' ferry is docked near the quay. This advantageous wind pattern allowed the firefighters to strategically place a few oil barriers in front of and behind the ferry to contain the spill effectively. The barriers successfully absorbed the leaking diesel overnight. In addition to the fire brigade's rapid response, officials from the water police, the Lower Saxony Land Service for Water Management, Coasts and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), and the port operator NPorts collaborated on the scene to manage the situation. Ferry 'Frisia II' Stranded with 650 Passengers Off Juist
On January 5, 2016, the ferry 'Frisia II' found itself grounded between Juist and Norddeich shortly after its 7:20 a.m. departure. With 650 passengers aboard, the vessel was unable to be refloated due to the receding tide, which rendered rescue efforts ineffective until the following high tide. The lifeboat 'Carsten Knigge' was dispatched to assist, and by afternoon, a paramedic along with 230 blankets was delivered to the stranded ferry via the smaller ship 'Frisia 9'. The ferry finally freed itself around 7 p.m. with the aid of the rising tide. The situation was exacerbated as ferry services to and from Juist had been suspended since January 2, following low water levels caused by a strong east wind, leaving approximately 2,000 passengers waiting to return to the mainland. The 'Frisia II' was one of five ferries that set sail at 6:45 a.m. that day, with four successfully reaching their destinations.
