Courageous Ferry Captain Rescues Stranded Sea Kayaker in Norderney

Jun 08, 2021 09:16

On June 6, 2021, a remarkable rescue unfolded in the turbulent waters of the sea channel between Juist and Norderney, thanks to the vigilant captain of the ferry 'Frisia VI'. Alongside a crew from a nearby motorboat and the lifeboat 'Eugen' from the DGzRS station Norderney, they successfully saved a man who had capsized while sea kayaking. The unfortunate incident occurred around 1 p.m. after the man had launched from the east port of Norden-Norddeich with four fellow kayakers earlier that morning. While navigating the Dove Deep near buoy D11, the kayaker found himself battling strong currents as he struggled to get back into his kayak. Despite the valiant attempts of his companions, the rough conditions made it impossible for him to regain his balance. Fortunately, the captain of 'Frisia VI' was passing by and quickly recognized the life-threatening situation. Without hesitation, he alerted the DGzRS station Norderney, initiating a swift response. Just minutes later, the lifeboat 'Eugen' arrived on-site to assist in the rescue. The strong ebb current, measuring 4.5 knots, had swept the kayaker approximately 400 meters northward, making the rescue more challenging. Meanwhile, the crew of a motorboat worked diligently to keep the distressed kayaker afloat using a sling. As the sea churned and the current surged, the rescuers faced significant obstacles in their efforts. Eventually, they managed to retrieve the severely hypothermic and exhausted man using a rescue net near the west beach, between buoys 20 and 22. In a vulnerable condition, the kayaker was unable to help himself during the extraction process. Once onboard, the rescuers promptly wrapped him in warm blankets and rushed him back to shore. An ambulance awaited at the port of Norderney to provide immediate medical assistance as part of the continued care for the fortunate survivor.

Frisia VI Engine Malfunction Off Norderney Resolved

Aug 10, 2018 21:12

On August 10, 2018, at approximately 11 a.m., the ferry 'Frisia VI', carrying 60 passengers, encountered a critical engine failure while navigating near the west beach of Norderney en route to Norddeich. Despite this challenging situation, the vessel successfully maintained its position using its operational bow thruster. In response to the emergency, the lifeboat 'Eugen' from the German Maritime Search and Rescue (DGzRS) station in Norderney was dispatched to provide assistance. The 'Eugen' towed the ferry toward the port. Fortunately, just before reaching the dock, the crew of the 'Frisia VI' managed to restart the engines, allowing the ferry to complete its journey under its own power and safely berth at 1:36 p.m. For more details and photographs of the incident, visit the German report here: https://www.seenotretter.de/aktuelles/seenotfaelle/ansicht/news/zahlreiche-einsaetze-der-seenotretter-gewittertief-nadine-zieht-ueber-nord-und-ostsee/

Grounding Incident of FRISIA VI: A Night to Remember

Oct 18, 2010 21:41

On the evening of October 16, 2010, the passenger ferry 'Frisia VI' (IMO 8827179) found itself in a precarious situation when it ran aground approximately seven kilometers off the coast of Juist during its journey from Norddeich. The vessel, carrying 250 passengers, was en route when strong eastern winds led to the unexpected grounding. A rescue boat was dispatched to assist, successfully evacuating nine passengers while the remaining individuals were provided with essential provisions such as food and blankets to ensure their comfort during the incident. Thankfully, as the tide began to rise on the morning of October 17 at 5 a.m., the 'Frisia VI' was refloated and continued on its planned route, ultimately reaching its destination despite the earlier disruptions. The ferry had originally departed Norddeich at 6:40 p.m., with the journey expected to last approximately 90 minutes. This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of maritime travel and the importance of safety measures on board.
