Working Conditions Aboard the Froya

On March 18, 2015, the tanker 'Yara Froya' was navigating from Fredericia to Hamburg when it inadvertently entered a restricted traffic zone north of Kiel shortly before midnight. Observing this deviation, the traffic control center in Travemünde promptly alerted the Kiel water police. Upon boarding the vessel, officers detected the scent of alcohol and confirmed that the captain had a blood alcohol level of 1.27 per mille. As a result, the vessel was directed to dock at North Port in Kiel until the captain could regain sobriety. The master of the tanker was required to pay a safety deposit of 4,000 Euros and was subsequently terminated from his position by Larvik Shipping AS. The 'Yara Froya' finally berthed at Voith-Quay on March 19 at 1:10 a.m., and after a comprehensive port state control inspection, was released from detention later that day at 4 p.m. The ship then resumed its journey to Hamburg, where it arrived at the Van Ommeren Terminal on March 20 at 3:15 a.m.
