Historic Shipwreck Unearthed Amid Wind Farm Surveys in Lithuania
During a detailed seabed survey for Lithuania's inaugural offshore wind facility, operated by Ignitis Renewables—a branch of the state-backed energy conglomerate Ignitis Grupe—the 'Fugro Frontier' made an intriguing finding: a sunken vessel resting approximately 38 meters beneath the waves. Upon learning about this shipwreck discovery, the operating team promptly alerted the pertinent state authorities, as this maritime relic was absent from existing records. The wreckage, measuring roughly 70 meters in length and six meters in height, represents a significant archaeological opportunity. Further investigations encompassing historical and underwater archaeological assessments are anticipated to unveil more about this submerged artifact. Currently, there are 19 known shipwreck sites cataloged within Lithuania's territorial waters of the Baltic Sea, all part of the Register of Cultural Heritage. The designated area for potential wind energy projects spans 120 square kilometers, making this detailed survey a first of its kind. Collaborating with Ignitis Renewables on this project is Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions, a reputable offshore engineering firm from the UK's Venterra Group, along with Lithuania's own Geobaltic.
