Fundy Rose Ferry Service Start Delayed

Jul 16, 2015 11:12

The much-anticipated 'Fundy Rose' ferry has faced unexpected delays, preventing it from replacing the aging 'Princess of Acadia' on the crucial Digby-Saint John route originally scheduled for July 17, 2015. After successfully completing its second call to both ports on July 15, which included final ramp checks, sea trials, and a ceremonial ribbon-cutting alongside a public open house, Bay Ferries has announced that additional preparations are needed before the vessel can officially enter service. Since its arrival in Canada in December 2014, the 'Fundy Rose' has been undergoing extensive refit and renovations in Halifax. The federal government had initially projected a spring debut but later revised this timeline, indicating readiness by the end of July. Acquired for $44.6 million from Greece's Blue Star ferry line in fall 2014, the 'Fundy Rose' is expected to modernize service on the busy route. In the meantime, the reliable 41-year-old 'Princess of Acadia' continues to operate on an updated schedule intended to accommodate the new faster vessel.

Canada Secures New Ferry for Digby-Saint John Route: Blue Star Ithaki Acquisition Details

Nov 01, 2014 11:00

DIGBY - In a significant development for maritime transport, the Canadian federal government officially confirmed on October 31 the acquisition of the ferry BLUE STAR ITHAKI from a private operator based in Greece. This strategic move aims to replace the aging Princess of Acadia on the crucial ferry route between Digby and Saint John. The agreement, finalized on October 10, encompasses a purchase price of approximately $44.6 million. The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation process that involved scrutinizing various potential vessels worldwide. The Blue Star Ithaki emerged as the optimal choice, striking the perfect balance of value and capability to meet the operational demands of the Digby-Saint John ferry service. The new ferry is anticipated to begin service in the upcoming year. Once the Ithaki arrives in Canada, necessary modifications will be conducted to ensure compliance with Canadian safety regulations and compatibility with existing shore facilities in the Bay of Fundy. The Blue Star Ithaki, a roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) passenger ferry registered under the Greek flag, was originally constructed in 2000 by Daewoo Industries. Transport Canada has noted that this vessel is in exceptional condition, boasting at least 20 years of remaining operational life. Designed specifically to transport wheeled cargo—including cars, trucks, and semi-trailer units—the Ithaki measures 124 metres in length and 19 metres in width, with a cruising speed of 20 knots. It also offers modern onboard amenities and dedicated decks for vehicles and passengers. Bay Ferries Ltd. operates the Digby-Saint John ferry service year-round using the Transport Canada-owned Princess of Acadia. Since 2006, Ottawa has contributed approximately $38 million to sustain this vital service, which plays an essential role in supporting local communities and economic activities. During the announcement of the ferry's purchase, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt emphasized the service's significance for regional trade and tourism. "This replacement vessel will ensure the continued safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the service while creating jobs and supporting the local economy," she stated. Interestingly, the announcement was not entirely unexpected in the Digby area, as locals were already intrigued by the Blue Star Ithaki. Reports in The Digby Courier on October 3 revealed that residents were actively searching for images of the vessel in operation in Greece. In an open council meeting held on September 22, Linda Gregory, warden of the Municipality of Digby, indicated that she had viewed photographs of the ferry, adding, "We’ve known for months but we’ve been asked not to say anything. It looks nice." Norm Lockyer, chair of the Bay of Fundy Marine Transportation Association, echoed similar sentiments during the association's annual general meeting on September 24, hinting at the ongoing discussions surrounding the ferry choice.
