Bulk Carrier Rescues Distressed Yacht and Crew Off Durban Coast

Aug 26, 2015 12:26

On August 24, 2015, at approximately 5:40 PM, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Durban duty crew sprang into action at the request of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). The bulk carrier 'Kishore' had spotted red distress flares and diverted from its course to investigate. Upon reaching the source of the flares, the crew discovered a couple and their Schnauzer dog aboard the yacht 'See Brok'. The vessel was immobilized, lacking both motor and electrical power, and suffered damage to its main sails, necessitating urgent assistance. While en route from Hazira to Saldanha, the 'Kishore' waited on-site until the NSRI's lifeboat, 'Eikos Rescuer II', arrived at approximately 10:45 PM. Under challenging conditions with 15 to 20 knot North Easterly winds and 3-meter swells, the rescue team successfully rigged a tow-line to transport the yacht back towards Durban’s Port. Fortunately, all individuals on board the 'See Brok' were reported safe during the operation. The next day, August 25, at around 10:30 AM, the crew aboard the 'See Brok' reported alarming news: water was ingressing and the yacht was sinking. The NSRI crew made efforts to deliver pumps to the stricken vessel; however, the dire situation led the couple and their canine companion to abandon ship and subsequently board the sea rescue craft. Thankfully, both Mr. and Mrs. Lubbe, along with their dog, were wearing life jackets and sustained no injuries during the ordeal. Tragically, their yacht was lost to the sea. The couple, residents of Richards Bay originally from Cape Town, revealed that they encountered difficulties soon after launching from Zululand Yacht Club on August 23. Adrift and powerless, they had taken to using a makeshift sail before signaling for help with the distress flares on August 24 at around 4 PM. Following the incident, both the South African Maritime Safety Authority and maritime police initiated investigations into the sinking of the 'See Brok'. Singaporean Arrest of Bulk Carrier 'Kishore' Tied to Bunker Dispute

Nov 21, 2013 20:27

On November 17, 2013, the bulk carrier 'Kishore' was seized in Singapore amidst concerns related to a bunker fuel dispute. This information was validated by a representative from Essar Shipping, headquartered in Mumbai, who confirmed that the vessel was en route from Brazil, transporting iron ore to China at the time of its arrest. While it is anticipated that 'Kishore' may be released around November 21, 2013, official details regarding the nature of the bunker dispute remain unverified.
