On January 27, 2022, at 11 a.m., the cargo ship 'Gelibolu', which was transporting steel products from Iskenderun to Burgas, encountered a technical failure while navigating through the Çanakkale Strait. As a result, the vessel ran aground at Kumkale, situated at the southern entrance of the strait. Immediate action was taken with the assistance of the Coastal Safety tug 'Türkeli' and the lifeboat 'Kıyı Emniyeti 1', supported by a team of divers. At the time of the incident, the weather conditions featured south-west winds at a force of 4 Beaufort. Refloating operations commenced at 6 p.m., successfully moving the ship to an anchorage at Akçansa, near the Bozcaada Islands.
