Courageous Rescue: Bulk Carrier Genco Bourgogne Saves Distressed Sailors Near Bermuda

Feb 12, 2026 11:40

On February 3, 2026, the bulk carrier 'Genco Bourgogne', which was journeying from Ceyhan to Baltimore, undertook a heroic rescue of three crew members from the distressed sailing yacht 'Zion' in the North Atlantic region, approximately 50 miles east-northeast of Bermuda. The maritime rescue effort was coordinated by local maritime authorities as the sailors had issued a distress signal, but it took 36 hours for help to reach them due to difficult weather conditions. 'Genco Bourgogne' braved heavy seas, strong winds, and substantial swell to alter its course and make its way toward the yacht’s last reported location. The bulk carrier navigated through the challenging North Atlantic climate for almost 24 hours before finally spotting the distressed vessel. The recovery mission was not straightforward; it demanded multiple attempts before safely bringing all three sailors onboard, a feat attributed to the exceptional seamanship and skillful handling of the ship by the crew. Captain Pankaj Kochhar and Chief Engineer Sambhaji Kambli led the operation, ensuring that both the bulk carrier and the situation remained under control through the relentless conditions. Once aboard the Genco Bourgogne, the rescued sailors were promptly provided with food, warm clothing, and first aid, as well as all necessary care before being disembarked safely. Following procedure, the yacht 'Zion' was left to drift as the team navigated back to their intended destination. The Genco Bourgogne successfully docked in Baltimore on February 7, 2026.
