On April 18, 2025, a critical incident unfolded when a 42-year-old crew member aboard the dredger 'Giovanni Venturi' collapsed in the Punta Indio Channel of the Río de la Plata. The emergency was triggered when the crew member suffered a head injury and began experiencing seizures, leading the ship's captain to urgently request medical help. Coordinated by the Argentine Naval Prefecture, a swift rescue operation was launched, deploying both a helicopter and an airplane from the Mar del Plata Air Station. The incident took place over 100 kilometers from La Plata, heightening the urgency of the situation, as the crew member displayed troubling signs of possible respiratory arrest. In response, the crew initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while establishing communication with the medical team from the air force. Given the alarming medical condition of the victim, the specialized medical evacuation protocol was activated. A medical team, including a physician, was dispatched to the scene onboard an aircraft. The crew member was carefully lifted into a medical basket and airlifted to safety. During the helicopter transport, he received vital initial medical attention. After a seamless flight, the patient was landed at the Buenos Aires Air Station and immediately transferred by ambulance to a nearby medical center for crucial further treatment.
