Residents and visitors to Bay of Plenty beaches are urged to be vigilant following the discovery of metal canisters washed ashore, lost by the MV Gladiator cargo ship during its journey. The incident occurred when the vessel, en route from Napier to China, encountered rough seas on Wednesday night, leading to the loss of 14 flasks containing aluminium phosphide (ALP). The MV Gladiator was approximately 200 kilometers offshore from Opotiki at that time, as reported by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. ALP is commonly used for treating wood products, but it poses serious risks; upon exposure to air and moisture, it releases toxic phosphine gas, making it not only hazardous but also highly flammable. Beachgoers are advised to keep a lookout for these potentially dangerous canisters and report any sightings to local authorities for safe disposal.
