(Bloomberg) — BP Plc has officially inaugurated a transformative oil project in the North Sea that aims to revive halted production from 2013 while positioning the company to double its output in the region by the close of the decade. The Quad 204 initiative includes the creation and deployment of the largest harsh water floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel in the world, aptly named 'Glen Lyon'. With a substantial budget of £4.4 billion ($5.7 billion), BP and its collaborators are focusing on developing new floating production and supply vessels, alongside revitalizing the aging Schiehallion and Loyal fields. According to a Monday statement from the London-based energy giant, output from the Quad 204 project is set to scale up to 130,000 barrels of oil per day within this year. BP's strategy aims to increase its U.K. North Sea production to a notable 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily by the year 2020. The North Sea region, recognized as one of the most costly environments for oil extraction and exploration, has faced declining volumes in the past decade due to aging fields and reduced exploration budgets stemming from a three-year downturn in crude prices. Additionally, BP's partner, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, indicated earlier this year its intention to divest a significant portion of its North Sea interests.

EnerMech, a leader in mechanical engineering, has embarked on a significant project with BP, valued at over £5 million, to assist in the hook-up operations of the Glen Lyon Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit. This crucial phase arrives as the Glen Lyon sets sail for its integration duties in the waters west of Shetland. As a central component of the ambitious multibillion-pound Quad204 initiative, the Glen Lyon FPSO plays a vital role in the redevelopment of the Schiehallion and Loyal fields, aimed at extending hydrocarbon production until 2035 and potentially beyond.

BP has achieved a significant milestone in the development of its Quad 204 redevelopment initiative, located 175 kilometers off the coast of Shetland. The new floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, named Glen Lyon, has departed from the Hyundai Heavy Industries facility in South Korea and is now undergoing sea trials en route to the UK sector. Measuring an impressive 270 meters in length and 52 meters in width, the Glen Lyon stands as one of the largest FPSOs operating in the North Sea. This groundbreaking project comes in the wake of the initial oil discoveries in the Schiehallion field in 1993, followed by the Loyal field a year later. Production commenced in 1998 with the Schiehallion FPSO, the very unit that Glen Lyon is slated to replace. The Schiehallion and Loyal fields have an estimated combined reserve of over one billion barrels, with only approximately 15% having been recovered thus far.
