In a strategic move to enhance its footprint in the West African maritime market, Dutch ro-ro shipping giant NMT Group has officially announced the acquisition of fellow Dutch operator RMR Shipping, according to IHS-Maritime. This merger will lead to the formation of a new division called NMT Africa, which will be headquartered at NMT's Antwerp branch office. Known for its global transportation of vehicles including cars, trucks, and trailers, NMT aims to leverage RMR's specialized focus on routes from Northern Europe to West Africa, specifically Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. Both companies share a unique operational model, utilizing charter vessels and fixed space agreements without owning vessels outright. In a company statement, NMT indicated that this new entity will help meet the demand for a dedicated operational and commercial presence in the West African region. The restructured service framework is anticipated to be fully operational by January 1, 2015.
