Detention of 'Go Electra' Highlights Maritime Labor Violations

Apr 01, 2019 11:57

On March 29, 2019, the 'Go Electra' was detained in Vigo under the directive of the Maritime Captaincy. This action came after the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) raised concerns regarding violations of the International Maritime Labor Convention, particularly citing unpaid wages among other significant issues. During an inspection conducted by Paris MOU inspectors, a striking absence of maintenance on the vessel was discovered. Additionally, the Maritime Captaincy reported serious deficiencies in the working conditions of the crew, predominantly composed of Polish nationals. After resolving the cited issues, the 'Go Electra' finally departed from port on May 16 at 9:30 p.m., setting sail for Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) scheduled for June 7.
