In a troubling incident that occurred in the early hours of February 11, 2025, an oil spill was reported during the bunkering operations of the tanker 'Jag' (IMO: 9266762) in the Ahırkapı Anchorage area off Istanbul. The tanker had moored there on February 10, positioned at 40° 57' N 028° 45' E, and was conducting bunkering with the 'Gökdeniz' (IMO: 9373254) at the time of the spill. Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Coastal Safety crews deployed lifeboats 'Kıyı Emniyeti 3' and 'Kıyı Emniyeti 4', along with an environmental barge and the tug 'Mehmetçik' to manage the spill. Recovery teams worked diligently to clean the affected water surface amid concerns about marine pollution. The 'Jag' has a history of multiple ownership changes and has been operating under its current identity since 2023, registered in Liberia with Rhine Marine Services, based in India, as its current manager. The tanker has a track record of several operational calls to Russia, including a recent cargo journey from Primorsk to Paranagua port in October 2024. However, the vessel's past inspections raise concerns; the last inspection in 2023 in Aqaba revealed 12 deficiencies, leading to a two-day detention. These included an inoperative emergency generator, fire doors, and deficiencies with both the main and auxiliary engines, along with issues noted for uncleanliness in the engine room and the presence of oily mixtures.
