Resumption of Shipping in Ukraine’s Black Sea: Four Vessels Depart Amid Tensions
On October 27, 2023, four vessels set sail from ports in Ukraine’s Odesa region as shipping activities resumed through a newly established export corridor, following a three-day pause. The bulk carriers 'Propus', 'Iasos', 'Gloria G', and 'Manassa Queen' departed from their Odesa berths, while the tanker 'Mavka', alongside the 'Golden Arrow' and cargo ship 'Maranta', made their way toward Ukrainian shores. A report on October 26 by Barva Invest, a Kiev-based consultancy, in conjunction with British security firm Ambrey and the specialized media outlet Ukrainian Ports, indicated a temporary suspension of the corridor due to potential threats posed by Russian military aircraft and sea mines. However, Ukrainian authorities quickly refuted these claims. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy affirmed on October 27 that the corridor would remain operational despite ongoing threats, asserting Ukraine's commitment to revitalize its maritime export activities. With continuing efforts to boost seaborne exports amid Russian hostilities, Ukraine is undeterred. As of October 26, 23 vessels were actively loading in the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi. To date, a total of 51 ships have successfully navigated through this corridor, with 33 of these vessels exporting over 1.3 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural goods and additional cargo, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.
