The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has announced the abandonment of the vessel GOLDY SEVEN (IMO: 9135731), raising concerns about the welfare of seafarers onboard. Registered under the Tanzanian flag, the vessel is currently docked at Kamsar Port in the Republic of Guinea. A total of 13 crew members are affected, with wages owed for two months. The crew comprises nationalities from Croatia, India, Indonesia, Montenegro, Pakistan, the Philippines, Syria, and Ukraine. This serious situation was formally reported to the ITF on 01 March 2026 and remains open as of now. The ITF’s ongoing commitment to monitor and address cases of crew abandonment globally is critical for ensuring the safety and fair treatment of seafarers at sea.

On May 26, 2025, the merchant vessel 'Goldy Seven' was detained at the Southampton port in the United Kingdom due to a total of 20 deficiencies noted during its inspection. Among these deficiencies, four were categorized as serious enough to warrant the ship's detention. The critical issues identified included the following: 1) Fire Safety - crew performance evaluations reflected inadequate training, 2) Labour Conditions - the sanitary facilities fell short of required standards, 3) Radio Communications - a lack of adequate reserve source of energy was evident, and 4) Pollution Prevention - shipboard garbage handling did not meet established regulations. After being held for inspection, the 'Goldy Seven' was released on June 10, 2025, and set sail toward Tangier, with an estimated time of arrival on June 15. However, due to the vessel's prior detention, access to ports under the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been denied, impacting its operational capabilities in those regions.

This vessel is poised to become the first merchant ship outfitted with a Flettner Rotor, an advanced technology developed in Leer. Following thorough land-based assessments, the unique rotor is set to undergo real-world testing in marine environments. Given that this type of rotor has never been implemented on a merchant vessel, meticulous planning and pre-calculations are critical. The Eco Flettner WHC boasts an impressive height of 18 meters and a diameter of three meters, showcasing its substantial engineering design.
