On January 3, 2017, the ship Gouraya, approximately sixty kilometers off the coast of Fos-sur-Mer, issued a distress call to CROSS Med requesting a medical evacuation. A 50-year-old crew member was reported to be experiencing severe hypoglycemia and had lost consciousness. In response, a Panther helicopter from the French Navy swiftly departed from the Hyères naval aviation base, carrying a medical team, including a doctor and a nurse from Sainte-Musse Hospital in Toulon. Upon their arrival and subsequent assessment on board the Gouraya, the medical personnel sadly confirmed the crew member's death. The deceased, identified as an Algerian national, was later transported to the port of Marseille.
