Heroic Medivac Operation Near Dwarskersbos Saves Injured Crewmember
On December 18, 2017, a dramatic medevac mission unfolded off the coast of Veldrift when the SA Air Force's (SAAF) 22 Squadron, in coordination with the Western Cape Government Health EMS and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) ASR, sprang into action. The operation was initiated to assist a 36-year-old Chinese crew member aboard the vessel 'Great Sui,' who had sustained an injury to his hand while anchored. At precisely 3:06 PM, the team mobilized, and an Oryx helicopter from SAAF 22 Squadron, along with an EMS rescue paramedic and two NSRI rescue swimmers, took off from Air Force Base Ysterplaat. As the NSRI stations in Melkbosstrand, Yzerfontein, and Mykonos were placed on high alert, Telkom Maritime Radio Services played a crucial role in maintaining vital communications during the operation. Navigating challenging conditions with gusting winds of up to 30 knots and a rolling sea, the helicopter successfully rendezvoused with the 'Great Sui' north of Dwarskersbos. The helicopter landed on the vessel, and the injured crew member was secured into the care of the EMS paramedic before being airlifted back to AFB Ysterplaat. Once on the ground, an ambulance crew took over responsibility for the patient, ensuring he was promptly transported to the hospital in stable condition. The entire medevac mission concluded by 5:50 PM, showcasing the incredible coordination and teamwork of all the involved agencies.
