Drunken Captain of 'Beaumonde' Arrested in Terneuzen
On March 16, 2014, the Dutch authorities apprehended a Russian captain from the cargo ship 'Beaumonde' in Terneuzen due to his excessive alcohol consumption. After being reported by a vigilant pilot who suspected the captain was inebriated, the vessel was safely brought to port at 2:30 a.m., just an hour into its journey. Upon boarding, law enforcement officers observed that the captain was struggling to maintain his balance and spoke incoherently. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed a staggering blood alcohol level of 2.5 per mille, which is five times over the legally allowed limit. Following this incident, the captain was immediately fined €1,800 and subsequently banned from sailing for a period of 14 hours. The captain promptly settled his fine and was urged by his employer to disembark from the ship. The 'Beaumonde', which had set sail from Ghent on March 15 and was en route to Cork with a cargo of fertilizer, finally left Terneuzen shortly after midnight and is scheduled to arrive in Cork on March 18 at 7 p.m.
