Crew of MT Gulf Sky Shares Harrowing Hijacking Experience

Aug 05, 2021 12:29

Crew members aboard the MT Gulf Sky provided chilling testimony during an investigation into their harrowing ordeal. On July 5, 2020, near Khor Fakkan, UAE, armed assailants from a smaller vessel masquerading as surveyors boarded the Gulf Sky. Afterward, the ship continued on course to Bandar Abbas, docking on July 7, only to vanish from the AIS tracking system. The crew shared their distressing experiences with investigators from the Dominica Maritime Administration, with findings made public in a report dated July 19. The crew recounted being threatened at gunpoint by intruders, who used cable ties to bind their hands and later blindfolded them before forcing them off the ship. Investigators suspect that the disappearance of the vessel may have been orchestrated by its intended owners or even the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, indicating a plan to redirect the ship to Iran and facilitate the distribution of Iranian state oil. At the time of the hijacking, the Gulf Sky was under the jurisdiction of UAE authorities following its arrival in Khor Fakkan on January 25, 2020, due to a legal dispute between the previous and current shipowners. The vessel had reportedly changed hands multiple times and was the subject of a pending criminal complaint lodged in the US, which rendered it unable to leave its anchorage in UAE waters. Upon hijacking, the crew noted that the boarders claimed to hail from Turkey yet communicated in Arabic and Farsi. One hijacker was notably marked by the absence of an eye, while another, purportedly an agent of the ship's owner, wore a black mask and goggles. Following their release in Iran, 26 crew members were flown back to New Delhi, India, while two remained in captivity for several additional weeks. The investigation included testimonies from Captain Joginder Singh and crew members Jatin Mithran, Patnaik Sumar, Suneet Kumar, Afzal Cook, and Amit Diwakar. Captain Singh expressed that his crew was collectively owed around $175,000 in unpaid wages, with his own earnings totaling $38,500 since he joined the ship on February 27, 2020. Typically managed through Metro Marine Shipping Agencies, payment has been elusive, and the crew has yet to receive their dues since July of the previous year. “We have reached out to everyone involved, but there has been no resolution to date,
