The maritime tensions in the Black Sea region have escalated as the Odesa Maritime District Court has issued an order for the arrest in absentia of the vessel "Varyag." This ship has been navigating between the Turkish shores and the annexed territory of Crimea under the Panamanian flag. The court's ruling became public on November 4, 2016, as part of the State Registry of Judicial Orders of Ukraine. The arrest warrant stipulates that both the vessel and its crew are subject to detention if they enter waters controlled by Ukraine. The "Varyag," allegedly owned by a company based in St. Petersburg, has been operating on this route since August 2015, having completed 18 voyages by the end of that year. However, the vessel's operations were interrupted in December following Turkey's downing of a Russian SU-24 military jet near its border with Syria. After a hiatus, the "Varyag" resumed its route on October 28, sailing from Kozachya Bay in Sevastopol directly to the Turkish port of Zonguldak. Furthermore, the ship was recently added to a list of 260 commercial vessels known to have frequented ports in occupied Crimea, as reported by the Maidan of Foreign Affairs monitoring organization, following the imposition of international sanctions.
