Ă–re Sound Welcomes Battery-Powered Ferry 'Hamlet' After Successful Conversion

Jan 05, 2026 11:46

On December 28, 2025, the ferry 'Hamlet' proudly resumed its operations on the Ă–re Sound route, marked by a significant transition from diesel to a battery-powered system at the Landskrona shipyard. Initially scheduled to depart the shipyard in mid-December, the launch encountered some delays. Alongside the return of 'Hamlet' to service, comprehensive tests on charging infrastructures and various onboard systems were conducted, all of which must receive official approval prior to the batteries becoming fully operational. With this conversion, the Ă–resund Line has successfully expanded its fleet to include three electric-powered passenger ferries. The switch to battery operation for 'Hamlet' is set to have a remarkable environmental impact, slashing the annual CO2 emissions from the crossing from an alarming 37,800 tons down to a mere 2,500 tons. Collectively, the upgrades of all three ferries are projected to result in an impressive reduction of 35,300 tons of CO2 emissions each year, contributing significantly to cleaner air and a more sustainable maritime environment.

Ferry Incident in Helsingborg: Damage Report and Service Resumption

Aug 23, 2018 10:19

On August 22, 2018, at approximately 1 p.m., the ferry 'Hamlet' experienced an allision with the quay in Helsingborg while conducting a mooring maneuver. The collision resulted in notable damage to the bow of the vessel. Thankfully, of the 113 passengers on board, only one sustained a minor arm injury as a consequence of the incident. Despite the force of the impact causing bottles and various objects to be dislodged, the damages required more significant attention. A bulge was identified at the ship's bow visor, compromising its watertight integrity. As a precaution, Scandlines temporarily reduced traffic on the popular Helsingør-Helsingborg route. After rapid repairs overnight, the 'Hamlet' successfully resumed service by 2:30 a.m. on August 23, restoring maritime operations on this vital connection.

HH-Ferries Enhances Capacity on Helsingör-Helsingborg Route Starting December 1

Oct 24, 2017 16:13

Starting December 1, 2023, HH-Ferries is set to bolster its capacity on the 20-minute Helsingör to Helsingborg shuttle service by extending the sailing schedule of the HAMLET vessel. This decision is driven by increasing demand from freight customers and a sustained period of growth in traffic. HAMLET will add five extra hours of operation each day, resulting in an impressive increase of 40,000 freight units annually, bringing the total capacity to 450,000 units per year. Johan Röstin, the CEO of HH-Ferries AB, commented, "Over a longer period, we have witnessed a rise in freight traffic, and in the last eight weeks, this growth has surpassed 8%. Our freight customers appreciate the efficiency of Öresund’s floating bridge, and this expansion is integral to our commitment to maintain the required capacity and high service levels. We aim to ensure on-time departures at all times."
