Daring Rescue at Sea: Tanker Saves Crew from Troubled Sailboat

Jun 18, 2019 12:42

On June 13, 2019, the 'Ardmore Sealifter' became a hero on the high seas when it successfully rescued a Toronto man and his crew, who were in peril after their 38-foot cutter 'Boundless' was forced to abandon ship due to perilous weather conditions. None of the four individuals aboard sustained injuries during the harrowing incident. The ill-fated journey commenced from Baddeck, Nova Scotia, on June 5, with the ultimate goal being the south coast of Portugal, a daunting 6,600-kilometer voyage set to span a month. However, the adventure turned treacherous about 600 kilometers east of New York City, where the crew faced fierce winds and towering waves reaching heights of approximately six meters. It was during this tumultuous weather that a massive wave struck the 'Boundless,' breaking its aluminum rudder and rendering it nearly incapacitated. In response, skipper Geoff Fairbank, along with crew members Neil Hetherington, Marty Cameron, and Alan Dalquen, promptly issued a MayDay call for assistance. Fortunately, the 'Ardmore Sealifter,' positioned about 30 kilometers south at that moment, swiftly altered its course to aid the distressed vessel. The tanker’s captain tactically rotated the ship to align parallel with the sailboat, enabling the crew to drop a rescue ladder approximately 12 meters down. A tense moment occurred when the 'Boundless' mast collided with the hull of the tanker, resulting in the mast snapping. Despite this, all crew members were successfully brought aboard the 'Ardmore Sealifter,' while the 'Boundless' ultimately sank beneath the ocean's waves. Having sailed from Castellon, the 'Ardmore Sealifter' later entered the port of New York on June 18, marking the end of a remarkable rescue mission that underscored the bravery and camaraderie often found among mariners.
